Scientific research is finally beginning to confirm that supplementation from blueberries may serve as a memory enhancer for the aged, improving and forestalling the onset of neurological degeneration.
Encouraging preliminary findings reported in the American Chemical Societys
Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry suggest that a recent study with volunteers in their 70's who drank "the equivalent of 2 - 2 1/2 cups of commercially available blueberry juice every day for 2 months showed significant improvement on learning and memory test."
The scientists from the University of Cincinnati, the US Department of Agriculture and the Canadian Department of Agriculture said the "findings suggest that consistent supplementation with blueberries may offer an approach to forestall or mitigate neurodegeneration."
Previous studies in laboratory animals have suggested that eating blueberries may help boost memory in the aged, but very little scientific work had been aimed at testing on people.
