Since 2010, Wellpark College has been proud to offer New Zealand’s first Bachelor of Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine degree. The Bachelor of Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine combines the skills of phenomenology (the study of experience, deep observation and consciousness of the human condition learned over centuries) with modern day science, to bring the best in complementary medicine.
In the first two years of study you will gain an extensive knowledge in a variety of health sciences including anatomy and physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, pathophysiology, microbiology, pharmacology and health assessment. Students will gain an understanding of research methods and the application of research to clinical practice while maintaining the core philosophy that underpins natural medicine.
A wide range of natural therapies are studied in-depth including nutrition, herbal medicine, massage and aromatherapy, all from a sound philosophical framework and research base.
You are trained in full health assessment that includes physical assessment, laboratory and functional medicine tests. In the final year your previous learning is applied in a clinical setting under the supervision of the clinical supervisors in one-to-one sessions with clients.
In preparation for clinical practice, you will develop a business plan in your final year. Graduates may choose to obtain a Diploma in Herbal Medicine and/or Nutrition by sitting additional papers at the end of their Bachelor programme. Please note: this course is not available as distance learning.
Graduates can apply for registration with the Natural Health Council(NZ) or the New Zealand Charter of Health Practitioners and become members of Naturopaths of New Zealand and/or the New Zealand Society of Naturopaths.

Diploma v Degree
“The Bachelor of Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine degree blends both traditional knowledge and holism with modern scientific evidence which gives a greater depth of understanding and prepares graduates to be health professionals ready to work within an integrated health care environment. Education in Naturopathy and Herbal medicine has moved to a deeper level with development from a diploma to a bachelor degree with questioning of long held practices and measurement of clinical effects at the individual level. This qualification gets us ready to take our place in the health care system”.
The Wellpark Student Clinic – The Prema Clinic
“We have a Clinical Supervisor onsite who has in-depth clinical skill in both naturopathy and herbal medicine and also in nursing and midwifery. We want our students to be well prepared to work in integrative health care. Because Wellpark is a small college the Clinical Supervisor is able to identify and develop specifics in the individual student in a range of areas. Distance clinical programmes just can’t achieve this”.
